Sherwood Forest Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has delayed the go-live of its electronic patient record (EPR) system because of “sustained pressures” in the emergency department.

The trust originally planned to partially introduce the EPR system in urgent and emergency care services in autumn 2025, after selecting Nervecentre as its preferred supplier in June 2025.

However, a board report from Simon Illingworth, chief operating officer at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, published in February, said that implementation of Nervecentre in the emergency department (ED) had been deferred from November 2025 “due to challenges deploying when the department is under sustained pressure”.

The report adds that delays in admitting patients into King’s Mill Hospital in a timely manner” have resulted in the ED being overcrowded at some of the most
challenging levels ever observed”.

A spokesperson for Sherwood Forest Hospitals, told Digital Health News: “We successfully went live with the system’s urgent and emergency care module in our urgent treatment centre at Newark Hospital in February, and we are continuing to work at pace to bring this module to our emergency department at King’s Mill Hospital as quickly and safely as possible.

“The trust is progressing towards implementing Nervecentre across the trust, with full implementation due to be completed by 2027.

“We are proud of the progress we have already made to make that happen, thanks to the hard work of our trust colleagues.”

Meanwhile, Scott Smith, EPR programme manager at Nervecentre, posted on LinkedIn that a launch event for staff on 3 March had an “amazing turn out”.

“Trust have signed up for a full EPR. They have a number of modules already live but with the EPR this also brings in PAS, investigations, critical care, theatres and patientcentre plus loads more,” he added.

Nikki Turner, chief digital information officer at Sherwood Forest Hospitals, told Digital Health News that the EPR programme is in its initial stages, with detailed planning and engagement work underway”.

“Once complete, the system will create a single, connected record, reducing duplication and improving the quality and speed at which data is shared, leading to safer, more efficient patient care,” Turner added.

Nervecentre has established a strong presence in the Midlands and north of England, with United Lincolnshire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust among those selecting the firm as their preferred supplier.

Other organisations to go live with Nervecentre include University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust, Chesterfield Royal Hospital Foundation Trust, Northampton General Hospital and East Sussex Healthcare.

York and Scarborough Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust confirmed that it has delayed the go-live of its Nervecentre EPR, which was planned to launch in February 2026, to focus on maximising elective activity and recovering urgent and emergency care performance after the winter.

Nottingham University Hospitals Trust declared a critical incident after it went live with its Nervecentre EPR in November 2025, but has since said that performance issues have been resolved.

Digital Health News contacted NHS England for comment.
