WORLD CUP 2010

The latest club competition saw an amalgamation of the 2010 world cup tournament and squash.  The basic premise was each player entering would draw a football team in the world cup competition and then play squash against the player who his football team were playing it sounds more complicated than it actually was, points scored in the squash match were then added to the goals scored in the match. There were two prizes, one for the person who represented the team who won the world cup it self and the second going to the player who scored the most points.

The 32 team entry soon sold out and a reverse handicap was put into place when the players draw took place, the top 8 seeded teams in the competition were removed from the hat and then the top 8 ranked players who entered the competition drew a team, after which the top 8 teams were put back into the hat, the idea being to give the better players a handicap, however with many of the fancied teams, France and Italy amongst them being eliminated early in the tournament it was not such a handicap as it should have been.

With the large screen TV and new sofas in the lounge many players took advantage of the facilities by playing their squash match and then sitting down with a cold beer and watching the football. The competition ran for the whole 4 week duration with a finals day organised for the 11^th of July, where a bar-b-que was provided and a 5 a side football tournament organised as well as the squash matches. The final 4 competitors left were Andrew Anderson (Holland), Graham Calder (Germany), Fraser Kane (Uruguay) and Graham McKay (Spain). Graham McKay eventually won the competition and Graham Calder won the prize for the most points scored with both players winning a £50 club shop voucher.  A final points tally can be found on the notice board at the back of court 2.

A big thank you must go to all those who helped organise the competition and most of all too all who entered and took part, I think all agreed it was a great format and one which we hope to repeat at some stage with other major sporting events
