HIGHLANDS & ISLANDS JUNIOR OPEN 2010

Some of the best juniors in Scotland gathered at Inverness Tennis & Squash Club for the HISA junior open. Players from the Highlands and Islands showed the wealth of talent in the area by featuring in most of the 7 division finals.

In the Premier Division Ewen Urquhart ( Inverness ) came from 2 games down against number one seed, Greg Lobban ( Inverness ), to win 3-2 in an exciting semi-final match which exhibited the full range of attacking shots to an enthralled crowd. Ally McCorquodale ( Inverness ) also reached the final by great 3-0 victories over Chris Leiper and Chris Shinnie ( both Aberdeen ).

Ally surged to a 2-0 lead in the final but Ewen once again found the reserves to hang in and take the next three games to add his name to the trophy first won by former World Champion, Peter Nicol, in 1989.

Another Inverness player, Kyle Gribben, clinched the division 2 title in a terrific struggle with fast improving Fergus Richards ( Wick ). Kyle came through 11/9 in the fifth game

Division 3 was won by David Beaumont ( Kinross ) in another best of five encounter against Michael Ross ( Inverness ) and Michael’s brother , Martin, was runner up in Division 4 losing 3-0 to Andrew Graydon ( Bridge of Allan ).

Liam Beales showed once again the talent being produced by the Wick Club when he won 3-1 against Jordan Geddes (Inverness) to take the division 5 title.

Kirsty Delaney (Fort William) won Division 6 with a 3-0 win over Sean Kelly (Inverness).

The final division was won by Melissa Cowan ( Edinburgh ) 3-1 against Jack Orr from Crieff.
