Findlay wins Underdog Tournament

Posted on 12 Feb 2010 by Robin

The Underdogs tournament gives players on the way up (or the way down) a chance to play against a similar standard and excludes all the Clubs top players.

The "A" event was well supported by all and both semi-finals featured adult against junior with the juniors triumphant. Findlay MacDonald had a close match with Fraser Smith which could have gone either way but Findlay was the more consistent and clinched it 3-1. Ewan Hearns and Garry McIver had a close first game but Ewan stepped up the pace to win the next two and progress to the final. Findlay took control of the final against his younger opponent and despite a brave effort from Ewan it was Findlay who claimed the Malcolm Campbell Underdogs Trophy.

In the "A" plate final it was also a junior against senior tussle with the junior coming out on top. Jordan Geddes showed how quickly he is improving by winning 3-1 against John Chisholm.

The "B" event had only one junior in the semi-finals but she was Scottish under 15 champion. Kirsty Lobban had claimed two notable victories in the earlier rounds but she could not cope with the pace of Andrew Callanan in the semi and it was Andrew who progressed to the final. Alan Lobban made sure the family was represented in the final by winning an extremely close five setter against Willie MacDougall. So Alan and Andrew both a bit tired from their exertions met in the final. They shared the first two games but the effort started to tell on Andrew and Alan took control to win the final 3-1.

The plate final was also a tight affair but it was Ewan Fraser who scored the vital points to beat Sandy MacDonald 3-1.
